After 27 failed attempts from people around the world, Canadian keynote speakers and National Geographic Adventurers of the Year, Julie and Colin Angus have put their hat into the ring. They are attempting the first successful autonomous solar boat crossing of the Atlantic. Why try this? The obvious attraction is to receive the renowned Guinness World record award but over and above this, Julie and Colin are looking to showcase technological innovation, promote environmental stewardship and collaborate with schools to inspire future generations.
This summer, Julie and Colin will launch the unmanned vessel from L’Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland to begin its 5,000 km voyage to Ireland. Throughout the journey, the aquatic robot will record oceanographic and environmental data to better help us understand our oceans.
Go Power! will provide the much-needed power to keep the unmanned vessel on target. With a 1200-watt solar array, the four-week journey to Ireland should go smoothly…at least power wise! Storms, sharks and collisions are another thing entirely!
